Christian Science was first brought to my notice some sixteen years ago. At that time I was suffering from hip and spinal trouble, consumption, and many other diseases. A friend wished me to try Christian Science, but I would not listen to her. I went to a surgical institute for treatment, where I was put into steel braces, and needles, cups, and the knife were used often.

At the end of four years I was able to walk without my braces, but was a physical wreck, and was told by six different physicians that unless an operation was performed I would never see another well day. At times my suffering was intense, my physician being compelled to remain with me for hours administering hypodermic injections of morphine.

I had been a member of the Universalist Church for twenty-five years, and had taken an active part in all its works as long as I could walk, and when compelled to stop I felt that I did not care to know anything about a God who caused me such suffering. I put my Bible out of sight and the darkness and despair that settled over me cannot be described. At that time I was compelled to put on glasses, which the oculist told me I would never again go without, and for the next five years I could not even read the daily papers or use my needle. The fear of consumption was so great with me that every winter I was confined to my room with the thought of lung trouble, but since coming into the understanding of this beautiful Truth I know that I cannot inherit anything but good from the true Parent, God.
