The Hungry Fed

It was spiritual hunger that impelled me to turn to Christian Science. For many years I had clung to these two promises: "Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled;" "Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: for every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened."

How I held to these promises, never realizing them, almost doubting them, yet holding to them! And all the while they were being fulfilled, as all God's promises are,—for I was drawing nearer and nearer to Christian Science, that wonderful Truth, with its rich fulfilment.

It was the unselfish daily life of a friend that directly attracted me to Christian Science, making me feel that perhaps here was the help for which I longed so much. She loaned me "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." It seemed to me the most contradictory, and provoking book I had ever read. I kept putting it down in scorn, but such was the power of that "little book" that I could not let it alone. I was in the habit of lying down to rest every afternoon, and then it was that I would read Science and Health. One day, as I read, the thought came to me like the flood of light when a heavy cloud has lifted, "Why, if God is omnipresent, He is here! What am I tired and resting for when God is here?" and I sprang up, refreshed and joyous. That was the end of my habitual afternoon nap. The bondage to weariness was over.
