Christian Science and Materia Medica
To show the difference between Christian Science and materia medica I shall tell of an experience that came to me about ten years since, before I was interested in Christian Science, although I had heard of it. It was at a time when the grip seemed very prevalent and I was a victim, having a very severe case. The doctor called it return grip, as I had had an attack in February, staying in bed most of two weeks. I am a teacher and forced myself back to school at the expiration of that time.
My strength did not seem to return, and I was obliged to go to bed again, I think early in April. I employed one of the best physicians in Chicago. For about six weeks I was confined to my bed, suffering untold agony with an abscess in my ear. My mother and sister went up and down stairs with hot applications, and most faithfully did all they knew in their kindness and love to relieve me.
Sometimes the doctor called twice a day; I begged him to use an instrument to relieve me, but he wished me to be patient a little while longer, as he said if he punctured the drum I would always be deaf. I was seemingly deaf then in my right ear. Relief came at last. I remember when convalescing I said, "I would rather die than go through such a siege again." My strength seemed to be a long time coming back
