The Lectures
Nearly every seat in the parquet at the Opera House was occupied Friday evening, May 12, upon the occasion of the lecture by Mr. Carol Norton, C.S.D., of New York. His subject was "Christian Science: It is Christian; It is Scientific."—Evening Standard.
The lecturer was introduced by the Rev. U. S. Milburn, pastor of the First Universalist Church, who spoke in part as follows:—
Ladies and Gentlemen:—As a representative of Cortland, it is my province and pleasure to welcome to our midst and introduce to you the speaker of the evening. I do this, not because I am an advocate of the philosophy which he will expound to us, but because we should welcome any one who can add to our intellectual life, moral powers, or spiritual growth. As I understand it, the lecturer comes to enlighten us upon a subject about which we do not know so much as we ought to know; viz., Christian Science.
