Severe Case of Asthma

It was about five years ago that my attention was first seriously directed to Christian Science; I say seriously, for I had previously referred to it with mingled jest and contempt. and even when brought to my attention seriously as a means of healing, it struck me as most absurd. Nevertheless, at the earnest solicitation of a favorite cousin, I went with her to see a Scientist friend and consented to be treated. I had been a "close communion" Baptist Church member from the age of twelve (my parents being of the same faith) and the thought of my going to be treated by a Christian Scientist struck me as being little short of ridiculous. This thought I continued to entertain during two weeks treatment, when I decided I was no better and could afford to throw away no more money in that foolish manner.

For several years I had suffered with asthma, which became so serious that I was frequently kept awake several hours during the night trying to breathe, and the next morning would feel more weary than when I retired. During the daytime I carried a vial of medicine in my pocket, to which I resorted in order to obtain relief. After the two weeks Science treatment I took up my medicine again, but I grew worse instead of better.

In the mean time, however, I had read some in Science and Health, and believing as I did in the healing as related in the Bible, and finding no good reason why this method of healing should have been discontinued, I went back to the lady who had treated me. It seemed to me that I had treated her discourteously, to say the least, and so apologized. To my surprise, however, she seemed to think I had nothing to apologize for, for she said, "O, well, that's nothing! There's more joy in heaven over one sinner that repenteth than over ninety and nine just persons."
