Knowing what God is, showed me who God is—and who I am

Many years go, when I was a young theology student in a liberal Protestant university, I delved devotedly and energetically into Christianity’s most fundamental ideas. I studied the historical and 20th-century theologians, read the New Testament in Greek, and enjoyed intense discussions with my fellow students and professors. My colleagues and I were a rather arrogant, intellectual group, assured that we would find the answers to our theological quests through scholastic endeavors.

When I became more mature in my spiritual development, I realized that my scholarly study hadn’t led to a satisfactory understanding of God—or of myself.

My husband and I had both been raised in the same Christian tradition and he, too, was spiritually dissatisfied. One Sunday, shortly after our wedding, he suggested we attend a Christian Science church. His grandmother had been a devout student of Christian Science and he vividly remembered her spiritual strength.
