Entertaining goblins and ghosts—or angels?

Originally appeared on spirituality.com.

Preparing for my daughter’s kindergarten Halloween party was no small endeavor—we would be entertaining at least 30 children and their parents. Despite having plenty of activities meticulously planned, I wasn’t sure I could get it all ready before the guests arrived.

When I’m under pressure, I’ve found it helpful to make a point of thanking God for anything good that concerns the project I’m working on. But this time, whenever I began to express gratitude as the party plans went forward, I felt overcome by the overwhelming list of things still to do. And that list seemed a lot longer!

I’m accustomed to turning and talking to God regarding everything, but the mental noise of worrying about all the things I still had to do—with no help—was keeping me from listening for “the still small voice” of God.
