God's guidance while deep-sea diving

Originally appeared on spirituality.com

My husband, Bob, loves scuba diving. But two weeks into our Hawaiian vacation the ocean remained turbulent and cloudy so we were unable to go diving. Bob needed to return to work on the mainland. As he left, he said, ”The weather is supposed to be improving—so promise me you’ll go diving with the great outfit I went with last time. They’re the best on the island of Maui.”

My first reaction was total rejection. Although I had been diving many times, it was his sport, not mine. But soon I started to listen for God’s guidance. Sometimes, when I face new challenges, a conservative little robot of timidity, unwillingness, or just plain fear seems to be inside me, urging resistance to new ideas. But when God has presented a new idea, and I accept it, I have found amazing rewards that I might not have claimed, or even been aware of before.

Now, as I thought about Bob’s comment, I asked myself: was I was willing to open my thought to diving without my husband, if this seemed to be a right idea? I just didn’t know. I decided to be quiet mentally so I could hear God’s voice, not the misleading and limiting influence of the carnal mind—which is not my mind, God’s mind, or anyone’s. This material outlook, that little inner robot, can sometimes make us automatically reject a new idea through a kind of mental inertia.
