9/11—Five years later

Five years ago, the world as we knew it changed. After the horrific destruction at New York’s World Trade Center, the attack on the Pentagon in Washington, and the plane crash in Somerset, Pennsylvania, many people felt at the mercy of an undetected evil. Fear set in on a global scale and it still permeates our world.

Since that time, Europe has suffered terrorist attacks in Madrid and London, and there have been similar attacks in Africa and Asia as well.

Transportation security, especially associated with air travel but extending to the commuter trains my wife takes into Washington, DC, has more than doubled. People are generally more vigilant, and would-be terrorist operations are being thwarted—as the discovery of the plot to blow up airliners traveling between the United Kingdom and the United States illustrates.
