Spiritual healing — more than a matter of faith

Mark Swinney, C.S.B.

Swine flu is at the top of the agenda in this chat, but Mark also responds to questions about the difference between faith and spiritual understanding, dealing with discouragement, and with grief. Mark addresses the mistaken view that spiritual healing is actually “mind over matter,” or human willpower, by pointing to Jesus’ healing work as the model for spiritual healing. He says that Jesus “didn’t go to the human mind for this wonderful power that he healed with.” Instead, he went to his Father—God. Mark explains that it’s the turning to God and away from human thought that opens the door to God’s healing power.

Other questions he responds to include: prayer for a pet, how to know when one is healed, how to think about training techniques in running, dealing with chronic illnesses. In his comments, Mark brings out the power of prayer and the value of each individual taking the time to pray for the world, especially in connection with swine flu, in addition to the challenges they may be facing individually.
