Our Reading Rooms

One of the many activities of the Christian Science organization which Mrs. Eddy inaugurated is that of the Reading Rooms. The branch churches of The Mother Church and many of the societies maintain a Reading Room. All publications of the Christian Science movement can be read, borrowed, or purchased there. The rest and peace afforded by these Reading Rooms provide an opportunity for quiet study; and there deep spiritual truths may be unfolded to the thought of the student or inquirer, enabling him to go forth refreshed and helped on his way.

In Isaiah we read, "Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price." Is not this the invitation that every Christian Science Reading Room extends to mankind? To the tired, the sorrowing, the sick, the sinning, the hungry, the unsatisfied,—to all alike comes the loving, persistent call, "Come ye to the waters." On page 598 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy defines "wine," in part, as "inspiration; understanding." And we can surely obtain, "without money and without price," inspiration and understanding in these blessed sanctuaries of Truth,—yea, and the milk which strengtheneth, unadulterated for the seeker after Truth.

Perhaps the work of those connected with the Reading Rooms may be likened to the opening of the door to this banquet of Love. Their earnest, loving work and scrupulous attention to the rules laid down in the Church Manual for the care of the Reading Rooms, their loving desire to be alert to the needs of those who come, will surely open wide the door to this feast; and the needful one passing will also hear that call, "Ho, every one that thirsteth." The call is to every one. And as we ponder over the words "every one," we realize that there are none outside the pale of Truth, that the sheep of whatever fold are lovingly invited to drink from this fountain of Truth.
