I became interested in Christian Science while studying...
I became interested in Christian Science while studying medicine at one of the universities, and soon afterward was led to discontinue this study. I did not realize it at the time, but have since appreciated many times what a blessing this was for me. A healing which my father experienced, of a chronic stomach trouble, was the direct cause of my becoming interested in Christian Science; for, although I did not entirely understand how this healing had been brought about, I could not but believe that it was through God's healing power. Since that time I have been healed of many physical ailments and have been helped numerous times through trying business troubles.
Extreme gratitude is felt for the healing of the tobacco habit of many years' standing. Like most smokers, I justified the habit in my own thinking by feeling that it afforded me comfort and pleasure. There were many times, nevertheless, when I knew that it was not a source of true enjoyment, and would have given it up had I known how. Through the help of a loving practitioner, whom I had asked to help me with a physical ailment, the desire to smoke left me completely, and has never returned.
Stomach trouble, which seemed very tenacious, was destroyed through my study of Mrs. Eddy's writings and the Lesson-Sermon, and the help of a kind practitioner. For nearly a year, whenever I was troubled with this complaint, I had difficulty in overcoming the thought that it was caused from eating some particular kind of food. As soon, however, as the understanding was gained that "man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God," and I could obey to some extent Jesus' admonition, "Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat," I was enabled to follow our beloved Leader's direction in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 222), "In seeking a cure for dyspepsia consult matter not at all, and eat what is set before you, 'asking no question for conscience sake.'" I am deeply grateful for this healing, and for the great sense of peace and happiness which has come with the clearer understanding of Christian Science that was gained in overcoming this inharmonious condition.
