Finding my spiritual direction
The first time I heard about Christian Science, I was at a technical institute, studying mechanics. There, we interacted with people of different religions, and one day, a friend gave me an issue of the Sentinel. At first, I wasn’t interested, but I took it and read it during my free time. I was seeking direction and looking into different religions, and the Sentinel articles described an infinite Love that we can all feel as we understand more about a supreme, all-loving God.
As a result of the many challenges in my life, it was easy to come to other conclusions—even losing hope and a sense of there being any purpose in living. But the articles and testimonies in the Sentinel told me of a spiritual universe where peace and love are infinite and unconditional. I remember reading the verse “I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end” (Jeremiah 29:11). This actually gave me an expectation that I could face my difficulties.
I searched for and found a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, where I could visit and pick up more magazines to read. There, I found Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, which gives a full elaboration of Christian Science. I came to a point where I felt I could, as her words said, “emerge gently from matter into Spirit” (p. 485).
