Devastating damage or fruitful experience?
Over the years, I’ve had experiences that have brought me a deeper sense of home as a spiritual idea. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer of Christian Science, describes home as “the dearest spot on earth” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 58). Through the study of this Science, I have seen the need to cherish the spiritual attributes of home, such as love, warmth, security, beauty, unselfishness, and comfort.
News accounts often record the harsh and sometimes devastating effects of destructive weather, with many people losing their homes to floods, fires, and strong winds. In the face of situations like these, the true, spiritual concept—which is never dependent on material circumstances—brings us hope and practical solutions. Mrs. Eddy offers this clear promise: “Our surety is in our confidence that we are indeed dwellers in Truth and Love, man’s eternal mansion” (Pulpit and Press, p. 3). A few years ago, this truth brought healing to me after a destructive storm.
I had moved into a lovely condo that was an answer to my prayers about home. Two years later, however, strong winds and freezing temperatures led to loss of power and other major problems in my community. The sprinkler system in my building burst and sent water pouring into several condos, including mine.
