Unyielding strength

lighthouse on rocky coast

Nubble Lighthouse, Maine.

During a recent visit to York, Maine, my son and I stopped at Nubble Lighthouse. It’s separated from the mainland by a narrow channel of ocean water and stands boldly apart on its own rocky island.

After wandering about on the rocks for a while, I paused to photograph the visual drama unfolding in the sky above. It was a brilliantly sunny afternoon, despite a cluster of dark clouds that seemed to descend threateningly upon the lighthouse. Yet there was something deeply reassuring about the unyielding strength of the lighthouse and the purity of its whiteness. I also loved the upright and disciplined form of the lighthouse keeper’s home, so compact and secure.

For me, this scene represents the unyielding clarity of divine Truth and the unassailable strength and firmness of divine Principle. Though ominous clouds may sometimes threaten us, Truth and Principle never yield. Their power, their exactness, cannot be moved, eroded, nor compromised. In the midst of any darkness, any storm, they guide us—like a lighthouse—safely home.
