Growth on eyelid gone
About nine years ago a growth appeared under one of my eyelids. It wasn’t particularly painful, but it wasn’t normal or right. I immediately turned to Christian Science prayer for healing.
The first thought I prayed with was, “I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it” (Ecclesiastes 3:14). While this idea was comforting, the problem was not resolved immediately, so I called a Christian Science practitioner and we began to pray together to see my perfection. As we prayed, I found that various unhealthy thoughts began to surface. Some of these included envy; identifying myself with a human career, rather than as a child of God; and constantly measuring my achievements not just against those of others, but also in comparison to where I thought I should be at this point in my life. It was clear that these thoughts needed to be healed.
As I continued to pray over a period of years, my outlook began to change. I began to see that my real career was imparting health, holiness, and joy to those around me, rather than a human occupation. I am a musician, actor, dancer, and storyteller by profession. One idea a practitioner offered was, “God doesn’t know if you are performing on Broadway or in a nursing home. It is the spiritual qualities you express that matter.” I found this very helpful and often repeated it to myself before a show. I would also think to myself: “How can I bless these people? How can I lift them up?” This line of thinking opened me up to focus on what I could contribute to others and to the world, rather than being worried about how I could become rich and famous.
