A quick turnaround

One Sunday morning in autumn of 2010, I woke up at my usual time, got up, and sat in my draftsman’s chair. I began to get dressed when a funny sensation on my right side hit me. It was not painful, but it did not feel right, and I felt that I should call a Christian Science practitioner. I found it hard to pick up my mobile phone at the bedside and harder to punch in the numbers. When the practitioner answered, I could not speak clearly, but managed to say, “Stroke, right side.”

The practitioner said, “I am starting to work [pray for you] right now,” and gave me some spiritual truths to hold onto in thought. I can say that I didn’t feel the least bit afraid. I hung up the phone and sat there silently repeating the Lord’s Prayer and also “the scientific statement of being” from the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health. The first few helpful lines of this statement are: “There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all” (Mary Baker Eddy, p. 468).

Then I decided to finish dressing, but found I could not use my right arm. I looked at my wristwatch and saw it was 8:15 am and realized that the Sentinel Radio program was on. I went down the hall in my chair to where I keep my radio and speakers and tuned in.
