The following was written in support of Church Alive, a focus of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, that explores the meaning and possibilities of awakening to the spiritual basis and impact of Church.

The foundation of Church

Recently, I’ve been thinking about church in relation to the principles of architecture. As an architecture student, I have learned that form and function are vital. Each project begins as an idea and thinking about what qualities the structure needs to express.

The architect must gather and design the necessary components and form them into one harmonious whole structure. There must be places for the residents and doorways for workers or visitors to enter and exit. Windows allow light to enter and the inhabitants to enjoy different and broader views. A roof and walls provide shelter, warmth, and a quiet place to work and think. There are rules to follow and principles of engineering that establish the practice of sound and stable building.

A variety of styles have evolved over many centuries to adjust to the needs of mankind. A home, for instance, may be a place for retreat, peace, happiness, joy, contentment, and love. These express the qualities of Soul, another name for God. All of the qualities that are needed to build a structure are spiritual, of God, whether it is a home, business, school, church, or any other structure.
