Deep pockets for earthquake relief

“Small nonprofit has a big heart for Japan quake survivors” North County Times (Encinitas, California). July 27, 2011.

A small Christian Science group that runs a tiny nursing home in Encinitas started a relief fund earlier this year to help survivors of Japan’s devastating earthquake and has now raised more than $138,000, say the somewhat surprised organizers of the effort.

“It’s rather overwhelming,” said Pam Ludwig, executive director of the nonprofit organization called Sunland Home Foundation. “When we first decided to go forward with this we thought, ‘If we could just raise $2,500, wouldn’t that be great.’

“But when we got started the floodgates opened,” she said. “We almost had to hire another staff person to keep up with the letters and phone calls.”
