How have you seen prayer combat depression?

Yes! I have seen prayer defeat depression. I was 12 years old and knew nothing about Christian Science because I was raised in another denomination. My mother had a deep crisis of faith in that religion, and became very sad because she was unsure if she were truly “saved” according to their teachings. Her sadness cast a shadow over our entire family. She was visited by the pastors of this other church but to no avail. She wept constantly.

One day my dad announced he had “had enough.” He went out and got a copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures from a used bookstore. Somehow he knew about Christian Science from his boyhood. Handing the book to my mother, he said, “Here, read this.” Mother began to read the book. I saw her reading in the morning when I left for school. I saw her reading when I came home from school. Pretty soon all the doubt about her salvation left, and so did the sadness. As if all the curtains were lifted and sunlight poured in, our home was filled with laughter and joy, and Mother never had that problem again.
