Healed of depression

First printed in El Heraldo de la Ciencia Cristiana, the Spanish edition of The Herald of Christian Science.

I went through a period when I was taking many psychopharmaceuticals because I couldn’t sleep. I was distraught and very depressed, and felt the need to lie down several times a day. My husband used to cook for me and our small children. The sleeping pills I took seemed to cushion the painful vision I had of life, numbing my feelings.

A year before, my sister had given me the book Science and Health, but I wasn’t interested and had kept it in a bookcase. I don’t know what made me open the book. But at one point, I started reading and then attending the meetings of a Christian Science group that had been formed near where I live.

Science and Health opened an understanding of the Bible for me. At night, I would read Psalm 23 and some pages from Science and Health, where I found declarations that strengthened me a lot, among them: “Being is holiness, harmony, immortality” (p. 492), and “Truth is always the victor” (p. 380).
