Our path to true democracy
Lately, a series of popular movements demanding democratic government in countries that have long been controlled by dictatorial or autocratic systems have arisen. From a spiritual standpoint, we can consider this a sign of humanity’s mental progress. It denotes a greater awareness of the value of each individual, recognizes the principle of equality, and rejects arbitrary privileges.
This awareness is more in line with spiritual reality, the kingdom of God, as Christian Science teaches. In the kingdom of God, all men and women are the image and likeness of the only Creator and reflect, individually, His spiritual qualities as our Father-Mother God. Humanity’s search for an ever-improving democracy is the outcome of a natural, spiritual desire to get closer to the divine government. And the preservation and enhancement of democracy requires our participation—not through political parties or protest rallies, but through prayer.
In Christian Science, prayer is not a matter of asking God to do something or to intervene in human affairs. To think in harmony with this Mind is to acknowledge, affirm, and maintain in consciousness the reality created by God, which is completely spiritual and totally good.
