A LETTER FROM JIL—IN GERMANY

Hi, my name is Jil. I'm 11 years old. I live in a city called Krefeld in Germany. Krefeld is on the river Rhein (Rhine), in the western part of Germany, not far from the border with the Netherlands. What I like about our city is that it has lots of parks and public gardens, where you can go for walks and play. Krefeld also has a big zoo. I love to visit my favorite animals: elephants and zebras.

My family and I live in a house next to the Krefeld town forest. I have a sister and a brother. My sister, Hanna, is 13, and my brother, Gabriel, is 17. Gabriel works after school, and he often is not home. But I know he loves me. He took care of me when my parents traveled to the city of Dresden for three days. Hanna sometimes helps me with homework, and she teaches me things about hockey—we both love to play field hockey!

My favorite holidays are Easter and Christmas because then the whole family is together. On Christmas Eve we aren't allowed in the living room, where the Christmas tree is, until it gets dark. Then we put on our nice clothes and have dinner. I like it when my sister and brother and I recite poems on Christmas Eve before sharing gifts. We also play music. I play the flute, and Hanna and Gabriel play Christmas carols on the piano. We all sing.
