5 WAYS TO DO YOUR BEST ON THE SPORTS FIELD

Football coach Jim Moser is one of the coaches at the Principia Upper School, a school for Christian Scientists. Here are a few ideas he and his fellow coaches like to share with players to help them prepare for their games.

1 Watch your motives.

They determine how well you'll play. "Right motives give pinions to thought, and strength and freedom to speech and action" (Science and Health, p. 454). Having pure motives gives you the ability to have calm confidence and be a valuable teammate.

2 Decide what you take from the game.

Will it be frustration and sadness, or joy and a sense of progress? You decide what you are "winning." As Mary Baker Eddy wrote, "The objects we pursue and the spirit we manifest reveal our standpoint, and show what we are winning" (Science and Health, p. 239).

3 You can be a strong player and competitor.

Jesus and the Apostles show you how to be strong. Paul said, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" (Phil. 4:13).

4 Take advantage of each opportunity.

God gives you "fresh opportunities every hour" (Mary Baker Eddy, Christian Healing, p. 19). The most important play is always the one happening now. No matter how the previous play went, be ready for the current play.

5 When you face a tough situation, ask yourself, "How am I going to respond?"

In the Bible, God says, "I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life" (Deut. 30:19). Always choose to respond to difficulty by expressing Life and enthusiasm. Compete to the best of your ability, to the end of the game.
