IN THE NEWS A SPIRITUAL PERSPECTIVE

To defeat the scourge of HIV/AIDS

IN THE ROUGHLY 30 years since AIDS was first identified, more than 25 million people have died of the disease. According to 2008 statistics, slightly over 33 million people are living with HID/AIDS. Of these, 2.1 million are children.

Others affected include 14 million orphans in Africa, who have lost their parents to AIDS. They often are taken in by other families, but the quality of life for most tends to decline, as there are more mouths to feed in an environment where food may already be scarce. Roughly 50 percent of these orphans are 10-14 years old. The rest are younger.

Early in the history of HID/AIDS a significant effort was made to find its source, in the hope that by identifying a material cause, researchers would be better able to find a cure. On the other hand, Mary Baker Eddy's discovery of Christian Science has revealed a radically different approach to disease. She perceived the man and woman of God's creating as totally spiritual and inseparable from God.
