THROUGH A SPIRITUAL LENS

PLACE OF QUIETNESS

I took this photograph looking out of a window in a chapel, at a guest farm. It is in the village of Caledonspoort in northeastern Orange Free State, which I visit regularly.

The owner of the farm, a devout Christian, held Sunday services in the dining room for many years, and then built this chapel for the use of his guests on the only piece of level ground round about.

Fresh flowers are put in the chapel every day, alongside a leather-bound Bible, even if only a handful of people come in. The chapel is constructed entirely from local materials. The border of neighboring Lesotho is just beyond the fence in the foreground. In the distance are the Maluti mountains, basking in a westering sun.
