CHRISTIAN SCIENCE HEALED ME

I grew up in a small town in New Hampshire, never realizing there was a Christian Science church right down the street from our home. The word Christian was very familiar to me, but using Science in conjunction with it was not.

As a child, I wondered why life was so hard if God was so powerful. My mom's gentle reply seemed to suggest that God was punishing us for what Adam and Eve did—with the emphasis on Eve. Getting the same response wherever I turned, I carried this question for decades: Why did sickness, death, poverty, suffering, evil, sin exist? I felt lost and helpless.

Then about five years ago, a woman who'd befriended me noticed I was frequently ill and in pain. She asked what I was doing about it, so I listed my many medications and mentioned the surgery I was scheduled to have. She gave me a copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, urging me to read some of it before my surgery. So the night before, I read the chapter on "Prayer." It was difficult to comprehend. Discouraged, I threw it aside.
