WALKING WITH FREEDOM

In the spring of 2004, in the midst of a vigorous game of basketball, I became upset with the player guarding me, who our team felt was playing unfairly. Then, in driving hard to the basket (for what I anticipated being the winning shot for our team and the silencing of my opponent), I felt something rip in my leg, after which I crumbled to the gym floor in agony. As I was assisted to the sideline, the first thought I had was to pray to forgive my opponent and myself for reacting so angrily toward him.

As I prayed and my thoughts became calmer, I noticed the pain greatly subsided. Over the next few hours, hobbling around on borrowed crutches, I thought deeply and gratefully about all the proofs of God's care I had experienced, including a healing of broken bones solely through prayer in Christian Science. And I came to the conclusion that I wanted to rely completely on prayer in this case as well.

I began with a passage from the book Science and Health, titled "the scientific statement of being," which begins, "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter." It continues by declaring God's allness, and concludes, "Therefore man is not material; he is spiritual" (p. 468).
