VICTORY OVER PAIN

Not long after the 9/11 attacks on New York City and the Pentagon, I began to experience severe pain and sensitivity in one arm and along one side of my anybody. It was difficult even to bear any clothing against my skin, or to do my work at the computer.

When I called a Christian Science practitioner for prayer, the first words he spoke were, "Don't be a victim of terrorism." I didn't give it much thought at first, but it soon dawned on me how much I'd been feeling the pain of the 9/11 attacks and the human tragedy they produced. I recalled, as well, a television report about an increase in the number of patients going to doctors with all sorts of ailments. I sensed then that this was the pain I was experiencing, having allowed myself to absorb my country's pain and the world's deep sympathy and hurt.

In effect, I'd been engaging in the opposite of what Christian Science teaches, which is to look away from pain and suffering and into Spirit, or God, as our true source of being. This is how we come to know that God governs all, and that our true being is spiritual.
