SAFE IN AN OCEAN RIPTIDE

Last year over the Thanksgiving holiday, I took a cruise with my family to visit the Caribbean. We were all looking forward to spending some time together and enjoying the natural beauty of the ocean and the islands.

One day, my husband and I decided to go snorkeling off one of the beaches in Aruba. I'd never been snorkeling before, and was really looking forward to trying this new activity. After practicing breathing through my mask, I ventured out to join my husband, who was already swimming out by a reef where groups of colorful fish were gathering. I remember thinking that the water seemed so peaceful and calm.

Suddenly I realized I couldn't touch the bottom anymore, and that waves were gradually beginning to pull me farther and farther from the shore. When my husband saw I was in trouble, he swam over to help me, and I clung to him. But then the waves began pulling both of us farther out to sea. Panic and fear filled my thoughts, and I even imagined a grim segment on the evening news about our dangerous situation.
