ANYONE CAN BE A HEALER

STRIVING TO LIVE IN GOD'S CITY

I THOUGHT I HAD MY DREAM JOB : a visiting Christian Science nurse for New York City. But after only two weeks, I just wanted to go home. I'd come from working at a small Christian Science nursing facility in a quiet area to this large, multicultural, fast-paced, urban setting. I felt overwhelmed. I didn't know my way around, the traffic was aggressive, the neighborhoods seemed intimidating.

I called my mother. "Just remember," she said, "The only city that you work in is the city foursquare." She was referring to the sacred city that St. John described in the Bible's book of Revelation.

It hadn't always been my goal to be a Christian Science nurse. I'd lost interest in Sunday School when I was 12 years old. Then, at 19, a friend and I came upon a fatal car accident. I felt helpless. I couldn't even remember how to pray about what I saw. From then on I yearned to help others in some way.
