SPEECH AND MOVEMENT QUICKLY REGAINED

One morning last spring, I had just finished shaving when I suddenly lost control of the right side of my body. I was also unable to speak clearly. Because of this, I wasn't able to speak with a Christian Science practitioner, but immediately prayed to affirm my abiding and inviolable relationship with God. That spiritual fact, as well as truths from the Christian Science Weekly Bible Lesson which I was listening to on cassette, helped me put down the fear that had quickly arisen in my thought. Soon, my physical control improved somewhat. I was slowly able to get dressed with the use of my left hand.

Because I didn't want to alarm my wife, who would shortly be returning from a walk in the neighborhood with a friend, I decided to get to my office as quickly as possible in order to have some quiet time to pray about this situation. I also wanted to avoid the possibility of even a well-intentioned medical diagnosis from my wife's friend. As a further aid in allaying my fears and in not becoming preoccupied with images of the condition, I didn't check my appearance in any of the mirrors around our home.

When I arrived at work, I was grateful that none of the staff seemed to notice my difficulty, since everyone I saw was on the phone. I went to my office, closed the door, and continued my prayerful treatment. I was still unable to control my mouth in order to drink anything, and I couldn't type on my computer keyboard with my right hand. But I had more faith in the spiritual concepts I was affirming than in the physiological standpoint that was trying to tell me that some of my functions were all messed up.
