shaping a way of life

DR. DOREEN BLUMHARDT—renowned New Zealand teacher, potter, and ceramic artist—was recently recently awarded her country's highest honor: membership in the Order of New Zealand. This award, limited to just 20 living members, honors Dr. Blumhardt's lifework as an arts' educator and a ceramicist.

Aside from being a great mentor to many New Zealand artists, Doreen is a dedicated Christian Scientist who has also been instrumental in promoting the arts in her country. This included establishing the Blumhardt Foundation, which helps support and foster the rich tradition of New Zealand's decorative and applied arts. Now, at 92, Doreen continues to work in her home studio almost daily, inspiring others with her passion for pottery.

Doreen, a lifelong Christian Scientist, spoke on the phone with Sentinel Staff Editor Ingrid Peschke, from her home in Wellington, New Zealand.
