MOTHER AND CHILD, WELL AND HAPPY

A blessing that comes through prayer is truly an opportunity to "glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's" (I Cor. 6:20). In late 2003, my husband and I learned we were unexpectedly expecting a new baby. As much as we loved children, especially the three we already had, this development was not in our plans!

As I often do, in moments of great need, I turned to the Bible and to the writings of Mary Baker Eddy for guidance. I opened Science and Health to a passage that reads, "Under divine Providence there can be no accidents, since there is no room for imperfection in perfection" (p. 424). I realized this was God speaking to me. I knew that this child—this new spiritual idea—could not be an accident and could only be a blessing. We just needed to continue opening our thought to receive this blessing.

Although this pregnancy came at a challenging period in our lives—on top of the activities of our three children, we were beginning major renovation construction on our house—it was also a time of great spiritual growth. I was in touch frequently with a Christian Science practitioner, who was treating us through prayer, as well as with the midwife who had delivered our other children at home. The pregnancy was proceeding normally until the last month, when the midwives said I had developed a serious blood condition called toxemia-preeclampsia, which they said was beyond their ability to care for me. They felt I must have the baby in a hospital.
