'HERE AM I, LORD'
MY PARENTS probably just wanted some peace and quiet for a few days. Or maybe they thought sending their three adolescent daughters to an Episcopal retreat for the weekend would teach us the benefits of silence. Whatever the case, my two sisters and I wound up staying in a cabin where the nuns instructed us not to utter a single word—not a sound—between 8:00 p.m. and 12:00 noon the following day.
When Jesus talked about prayer, he was pretty specific in encouraging a quiet environment for communing with God.
