Diagnosed high blood pressure disappears

About eight years ago, I had to take a physical exam in order to teach in a special needs class in the California public school system. This work demanded a high level of energy, and the school required that each teacher receive a clean bill of health from a nearby clinic.

The examining physician told me that I had dangerously high blood pressure. He wanted to send me to a specialist and said that I needed to go on medication immediately. He also asked me to take a follow-up exam in a few months. Although I had sometimes been battling fatigue and occasionally felt my energy flagging during the day, this diagnosis caught me off-guard, and I was really frightened.

Given my diagnosis, the doctor was reluctant to give the go-ahead for me to work in what considered a high-pressure assignment. But I assured him that I would do something about it right away, and the school let me begin teaching on that basis.
