Freed from fatigue

I attended a Christian Science Sunday School as a child, and when I wanted to unite with The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, my grandmother suggestedI first read, cover to cover, Science and Health. The summer that I was 12 years old I did just that. In my 20's I took a twelve-day course to learn more about how to heal in Christian Science. I loved Christian Science and had great confidence in its power to heal me and to meet all of my needs.

Years later, when I had a two-year-old child and a demanding job, I had a dizzy spell in a restaurant. This began a period of over a year and a half, during which time I felt weak, dizzy, and tired much of the time. From time to time, I asked a Christian Science practitioner to pray for me and always felt the support of family members. The condition was never diagnosed, but the symptoms were similar to what I'd heard called "chronic fatigue syndrome."

I spent a lot of time in study and prayer, but didn't notice much improvement. For the most part, I was able to keep this condition to myself. But I was forced to limit my schedule, and at times was unable to perform many of my duties either at home or work. However, I felt this was a time of significant spiritual growth as I studied my notes from my Christian Science course and again read Science and Health from cover to cover, making many notes. I learned more about my relationship to God from the concepts in the book, such as those in this sentence: "The relations of God and man, divine Principle and idea, are indestructible in Science; and Science knows no lapse from nor return to harmony, but holds the divine order or spiritual law, in which God and all that He creates are perfect and eternal, to have remained unchanged in its eternal history" (pp. 470—471).
