Powered through the storm

Bob was coming to visit us on Cape Cod. Hurricane Bob, that is. It was on August 19, 1991, and I stayed home from work because of the predictions for a serious storm. As late morning approached, and nothing had happened, I wondered why I had stayed home. But then the wind began to blow—getting up to 100 miles per hour. It blew the tree branches almost straight up into the air. Then the electricity went out. I was becoming pretty scared, worried about our family's safety and also about our home.

Having relied successfully on prayer to solve problems before, I felt I could trust it again now. As I prayed about our safety, I also spent time reading Mary Baker Eddy's book, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. One sentence gave me the insight I was looking for. It says, "Spirit [God] needs no wires nor electricity in order to be omnipresent" (p. 78). I began to see that because God is omnipotent and the only real power—the divine power that controls the universe—power can never be lost.

I calmed down considerably as I thought about this comforting fact. Still without electricity, we used other sources of power as the storm continued: fire in the fireplace, the gas grill, candles, flashlights. Through my prayers, I felt led to go to a certain store that still had ice for sale, which I put in the refrigerator. It concerned me, though, that without TV or radio, we had no way to stay informed about the storm and what was going on along Cape Cod. However, a small box that had come in the mail that morning caught my attention. In it was a free radio I had sent away for weeks earlier using orange juice proofs of purchase. It even had batteries!
