"Some People Seem To Think ... you're either born with [courage] or you're not. The courage to stand alone in the workplace can be acquired. I think it has five elements. It starts with a willingness to be a little different.... It requires an ability to carefully consider, then accept or reject, other opinions.... You need a belief in yourself.... The world does not like 'different.' You will pay a price. If you believe in yourself, the price is lower. A belief in your ideas is crucial.... You must believe in the idea as much as you believe in yourself. It also requires a loyalty to something bigger.... It may be justice. It may be the long-term viability of the company. It may be an ethical reason or it may be moral. It may be a cause in which you believe deeply.... You don't buy courage at the supermarket, but if you develop the traits above, you can stand alone when the going gets tough."
