An UNEXPECTED Win
Originally written for The Herald of Christian Science
I've Been Playing Hockey since I could walk. When I was about nine years old, I started playing goalie. My first pair of goalie pads were these old, beat-up Cooper pads, with the three straps. I remember my dad and I used to go out and shoot goals on the pond in our backyard.
Something great happened this year when I played goalie in the Western Maine Finals—a hockey tournament that gives the winners the right to go to the state finals. The tournament was held in the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland. It was the biggest arena around.
The year before, our team, the Falmouth High School Yachtsmen, lost in double overtime in the finals to the same team we were going to play again this year. It was a big deal. Now it was a rematch. We had beaten them twice in regular season, and we were the best team in the state.
