On the sports beat

Sentinel staff writer Kim Shippey pulled together this week's issue on sports. Kim is a veteran sports reporter and commentator for newspapers, radio, and television (including the BBC in London). He has reported on four summer Olympics—two of them for The Christian Science Monitor. He covered rugby tours in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Europe, and the United States. He was a radio and television announcer at many Wimbledon tennis tournaments and at US Opens at Forest Hills and Flushing Meadows. Kim has worked on air with three-time Wimbledon champion, Fred Perry; Peter Cranmer, who captained England at rugby; Richie Benaud, former Australian cricket captain; and Harold Abrahams, whose exploits on the Olympic track were celebrated in the movie Chariots of Fire.

Few moments in my career have offered as much delight as I found in the Forum in Montreal as I watched the 4-foot 11-inch Romanian gymnast, Nadia Comaneci, score the first perfect 10 in Olympic history.
