Safe under God's wing

ABOUT AN HOUR into our road trip, our two-year-old daughter started crying. She acted like she had a stomachache, so I took her to the back seat of the minivan to try to help her.

Once there, she started crying even harder, and I decided to call a Christian Science practitioner to pray for her. But the practitioner's phone number wasn't handy, so I called my mom instead. She told me that God's healing power was right there with our little girl, and she said she'd have my sister call the practitioner for us.

After talking with my mother, I felt more peaceful, but my daughter was still crying hard. I held her close on my lap and prayed silently, and quietly sang a hymn to her, a hymn about the 91st Psalm, thinking of lines in it that say, "Thou Love that guards the nestling's faltering flight! / Keep Thou my child on upward wing tonight" (Mary Baker Eddy, Christian Science Hymnal, No. 207).
