How one person responded to death threats

WAKENED FROM a sound sleep, I answered the phone. The voice at the other end said, "I'm going to kill you."

Click. The person hung up. As I lay in bed, I replayed those five words over and over in my mind.

My employment at the time took me into an area where there was a lot of crime and racial conflict. But I was unaware of any enemies—and I couldn't think of anyone who would make a threat on my life.
