horoscopes?

Your future in the palm of His hand

Your future. Who or what controls it? Nicole Harms, of Hamburg, Germany. talks about her search for spirituality and what she learned about this question of “fate.” Earlier this year Nicole helped out at a Christian Science booth at a “New Age” convention in Hamburg where she was able to share her spiritual insights with visitors from around the world. The Herald spoke to her about her search, and what she saw as her purpose at the convention.

Nicole, how did you decide to take part in the “New Age” convention in your city?

I felt I had something in common with the visitors to the convention — the search for fulfillment. People have to be reached wherever they are on their spiritual journey. And God does that.

I wanted to share this with the people there.

Are you familiar with “New Age” beliefs?

A few years ago I was very involved with horoscopes, palm reading, and pendulums. I was curious about whether there was something that determined my path, or my fate. The pendulums and the horoscopes gave me the feeling of somehow being on a spiritual level.

How did you hear about Christian Science?

Through a friend. I was actually never interested in the Bible and God. But he was always reading the Bible and Science and Health so I just stuck my nose in it and thought the stuff was terrific. I soaked it up like a sponge.

At first I couldn't understand how I could be God's image and likeness. God always seemed to me to be something way up high that I could never reach. Then, suddenly, it was as if someone turned on a light. I saw what it meant to be His image and likeness — God expresses Himself through me. The more I learned about God, the more I discovered that I don't borrow security from Him. He is the source of my security.

And how do you view horoscopes now?

When l'm at the hairdresser's and leaf through the magazines and see a horoscope, it doesn't mean anything to me anymore. I am an idea of God, called man, or woman, who can't be 12 groups governed by 12 stars or constellations. The zodiac signs are lovely, and the star constellations have something fascinating about them. But it has become totally illogical to me that a zodiac sign could determine my character, because God is eternally the only Father-Mother of each one of us. Today I ask God for guidance, instead of relying on horoscopes.

I can illustrate this through an example. I make jewelry and restore furniture that requires gold leafing. For about half a year I looked for a combination workshop and storefront to rent for my work. I looked at about 15 shops. In every shop I saw something that made me want to work there. And sometimes I was very disappointed when a shop was taken by someone else. But there was no reason for me to be sad, because I trusted God. I knew there was a place for me and God would lead me to it. So I kept looking. Then I went back to a shop I had already visited once, which I had thought was too expensive. But it turned out that they had told me the wrong price. Immediately I heard a loud, “Yes!” inside me. And it turned out to be the perfect place for me.

Do you think God's guidance brings healing to disease, as well?

Definitely. Two weeks ago I was in the bathroom brushing my teeth when, suddenly, my back went out. The pain went from the top of my head to my legs. I couldn't bend backwards or forwards. First I sat down and read. I found a great sentence in Science and Health that states: “The recuperative action of the system, when mentally sustained by Truth, goes on naturally” (p. 447 ). And I prayed by knowing that God supports me — He sustains me as a backbone — and I cannot suffer from anything. Before I found Christian Science I had had this problem twice. It always lasted two or three weeks, with visits to the doctor and injections. But this time I was completely healed within about a day and a half.

I'm thankful I found my way to God in Christian Science.
