Freedom of movement restored

Recently I had a healing of pain in my knee that had made it nearly impossible to walk. The lessons I learned from this experience remind me of the importance Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer of Christian Science, placed on the expression of gratitude for healing through prayer.

I had been taking regular early morning walks for some time, when I suddenly noticed that my right knee began to hurt. It wasn't, however, until a few days later, when I was attending a summer study session at a nearby college, that the problem became acute. Once before, some years prior, I'd had a similar feeling and had been able to treat it simply with sudden dismissal, and I was grateful for the immediate healing. I had learned many rules for the metaphysical treatment of physical problems from reading Mrs. Eddy's book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. This guidance was particularly helpful: "Treat a belief in sickness as you would sin, with sudden dismissal. Resist the temptation to believe in matter as intelligent, as having sensation or power" (p. 218).

In this case, however, the pain and discomfort from walking increased until it became impossible for me to walk unaided by a walker or cane. My husband was a great help to me and stood by me. With the additional aid of the school administrators where I was attending the classes, a Christian Science practitioner, a Christian Science nurse, and the loving support of friends, I was able to continue and to enjoy the whole session, even though the healing was not immediate.
