YOUR LETTERS
Thanks for making the Sentinel so sharable!
In response to Allison Tar's essay in "Making a difference in the new millennium," some may live in a part of the country where people maintain their personal distance, but people here in Portland do not walk down the street, absorbed in their own thoughts.
Every morning my husband and I take a walk, and everyone we meet—dog walkers, joggers, walkers, teenagers—smile with a gracious "good morning" or "hi." My sister, living in an eastern city, has commented when visiting and shopping here that no matter whether she makes a purchase or not, there is always a smile from the clerks.
Oregonians don't have to start smiling. We already do.
