How do you make big decisions? Do you discuss all the options with family and friends? Make long lists of pros and cons? Research all the ramifications?

While these may be useful steps, they may not bring the clarity necessary to make a confident decision. What's needed is spiritual light.

We hope you'll find that the prayers, spiritual study, and healing experiences authors share in this column help bring the right choices and truly satisfying decisions to light in your life.

How a good example helped free me from drug addiction

During my sophomore year in college, several of us decided to move out of the dormitory and get an apartment. My parents refused to support this move because they said it would make it easier for me to use marijuana. Although I denied this, I had to admit to myself it was true. Still, I hung up the telephone angrily, saying I would pay for my own education.

However, I had been raised in a good Protestant Sunday School, and the Fifth Commandment came to thought: "Honour thy father and thy mother ..." Although I initially rejected this concept, the peace it made me feel kept me from moving, and I had to tell my friends they would have to go ahead without me. I had no idea at the time the impact that decision would have on the rest of my life.

While I did get more deeply involved with the use of drugs during that year, a good Christian example that was being lived in the dormitory helped me in a way that did not become apparent until toward the end of the year.
