I am not a victim

How I found peace after our home was robbed

It happened while I was out walking the dog one morning. In forty-five minutes, virtually everything of value was taken from our house. From the computer equipment in my home office and the stereo system in the living room to my husband's good watch and the garnet earrings my grandmother had worn. Nearly every room had been stripped.

I was stunned. This is a quiet country town. These kinds of things aren't supposed to happen here — even though I had left the back door open, as I did every day.

"You shouldn't blame yourself," said the police chief when he arrived at the scene. "You're the victim here."
