Fire's path is no match for God's care

My husband arrived at the shop just as the first fire truck pulled up.

Early One December morning a friend called telling us that there were flames in the display window of our florist and gift shop. He wanted to know if the fire department had been called. I asked him to call the fire department, and my husband dressed and rushed out the door.

I reached out in prayer to God, and called a Christian Science practitioner and asked him to pray for us, as well. His reply was not exactly what I had expected. Quoting from the Bible, he calmly said, "All things work together for good to them that love God" (Rom. 8:28). I said, "I don't find that a bit helpful." He replied, "You will."

Christmas season in the florist business is one of the busiest times of the year. In addition to all of our regular activities, we had been preparing for the holidays since July—designing permanent arrangements, wreather, garlands, and a number of ornament-laden Christmas trees. The shop had been transformed into a veritable fairyland. We had just had our annual Christmas open house, and it sparkled.
