Severe pain conquered
When my husband and I were newly married, I was teaching nursery school. One morning as I began to prepare breakfast, I was seized with extreme pain in my side, making it impossible for me to stand. My husband and my mother, who was visiting us, helped me lie down on the couch. Both began assuring me that since God was all-powerful and ever present, I could not be attacked by another power. However, the pain was so great it seemed to overwhelm me. Then my mother firmly told me to repeat the words "God is love" (I John 4:16). I was obedient and reached out with all my heart to divine Love, acknowledging my perfection as Love's spiritual idea.
Instantly, the pain ceased. I got up feeling refreshed, invigorated. We had breakfast, and off I went to work, rejoicing. There were no aftereffects from this experience, and the pain has never recurred.
After my husband and I moved to Florida, we were introduced to a variety of new flora and fauna. In particular, we were warned to beware of fire ants. These creatures are so named because their sting is said to burn like fire. One day, while doing yardwork, I picked up some fallen palm fronds. Looking down, I saw that my hand was covered with fire ants. Brushing them off, I silently declared, "All of God's creatures, moving in the harmony of Science, are harmless, useful, indestructible" (Science and Health, p. 514). I knew that God's creation is spiritual, not material, and it is impossible for His perfect ideas to injure each other. A neighbor who was with me warned me about what I could expect and kindly offered some medication. I thanked her, excused myself, and went indoors. I continued to fill my thought with statements of truth throughout the day. Science and Health urges, "Look away from the body into Truth and Love, the Principle of all happiness, harmony, and immortality" (p. 261). That is what I did. I went about my normal duties, and while initially there was a slight sensation in the hand, that soon disappeared. The next morning there was no evidence of the incident.
